I’m trying a new recipe today called Souffle Glace Aux Framboises. It sounds complicated, but it’s really just stacks of meringue cookies sandwiched with raspberry mousse. The meringue cookies are done, but I’ve come to a standstill because I have no raspberries. So in the interim, here's a cookie that's straight off the Guittard 63% extra dark chocolate chip bag. Recipe here. What are your favorite chocolate chips?
These are good cookies, but what I'm really in love with are the chips themselves. I usually alternate between various brands, but now I go straight for these. It must be the shiny red bag. What are your favorite chocolate chips?
Anna says
Yup, they're all good! I like using different chips in the same cookie.

These are my favorite chocolate chips too! A few years ago I bought probably 15 bags of chocolate chips and did a taste test, and these were my favourite Bittersweet chips. My favorite semi-sweet chips are the Trader Joe's brand. For fun, I brought the chips up to my family's house and it was interesting to see everyone else's reaction... My sister for example loved absolutely all of them. I think the chocolate is like beer and wine, where there are some better quality things but a lot of it comes down to personal tastes 🙂

I guess I'm a lucky girl; my local grocery carries Guittard chips, and they are cheaper than Ghirardelli and Nestle! I just paid $2.40 a bag. I was googling this red bag to see if it's new (I adore extra dark chocolate) and I found your blog post. I love the Guittard semi-sweet chips; they are my standard chip, but now I've found the 63% cacao, so maybe that will be my new favorite! I never buy Hershey or Nestle chips anymore--something strange in the flavor of both of them. I'm making a batch of chocolate oatmeal cookies tonight. I'm glad I found your blog!

Danielle, I love Callebaut chips too. Every so often, my grocery store sells big tubs of them in the bakery area.
Danielle says
Callebaut from Belgium is my absolute favorite! I give bags away for every holiday and they usually never even make it into cookies but are eaten from the bag. Try them yourself 🙂

I've never seen Guittard chips in the grocery store. I have, on occasion, bought Guittard or Callebut chocolate in larger chunks from a local natural foods store, but I don't go there too often so I usually buy Hershey's chips at the supermarket. I don't really like Nestle and sometimes I get Ghiradelli if they're on sale, but I actually prefer the taste of Hershey's.

We don't have Guittard chips here, either. I usually either buy the Aldi's brand or Hershey's. After big candy holidays (like Halloween, Christmas and Valentine's Day) I buy whatever chocolate I can find on clearance and keep it frozen to use in recipes.
Oh, and for big chocolate chip cookies I like the Ghirardelli bittersweet chips. They are bigger than the other brands and quite tasty.

Hershey's Special Dark chips are my chip-of-choice and Ghirardelli's Double Chocolate Chips are my second favorite. I stock up on Andes chips during the holidays. Love those peppermint chips! 🙂

It was the June issue...I will try to find mine. I know I kept it somewhere among my stack of cookbooks and food magazines! Their favorite was Ghiradelli 60% and the least favorite was Nestle. I have been using WF 365 for bake sale stuff. (365 was not reviewed)

Trader Joes. They're vegan and they're cheap.
Anna says
I didn't see the CI article. Is it in the issue with the raspberry chiffon pie?
sweetie says
i agree with the poster above that my favorite "chips" are crushed up chocolate bars or chunks with mini's not far behind. (i wish brands other than hershey's made mini's though).
i'd be interested in hearing what CI had to say!
KAnn says
Anna, did you read the CI review of chocolate chips last month?
Kelly says
Guittard milk chocolate chips, because they are huge and there is a great shortbread bite recipe on the bag. Also, they are tasty all by themselves.

I am still trying to find my fave, i will have to check for these

I usually just go for the good old Hershey's chips. I like to use a variety of different type of chips (bittersweet, white, butterscotch) depending on my mood so I like to just stick with 1 brand and Hershey's seem to have the most flavor.

I've never found Guittard chips in stores here, but I also never thought to look for them at Target. Next time I'm there, I'll head straight for their chocolate chip aisle (wherever that is). For cookies I love to break up Perugina Bittersweet Chocolate bars into chunks. The chocolate is super creamy and tastes wonderful in cookies.

Oh la la! Sounds like a very fancy dessert. I can't wait - I love raspberries.
I like using Ghiradelli bittersweet chips, because they're big and delicious. We don't have Guittard chocolate here. I bet I could order it online though.

Katrina, I wish we lived near each other! I have a friend who works for Guittard and he drops off chocolate bars/wafers/chips from time to time. I love their stuff - especially the wafers for general baking because they are easy to weigh.
Katrina says
I've learned that 60% is about as bittersweet as I can handle. I usually just buy the cheapest of the two at the time, Hershey's semi sweet and Nestles. Although, I LOVE Hershey's Special Dark and always keep a bag of those in stock as well as some milk chocolate chips. I do REALLY like the Guittard chips, but can't bring myself to pay twice as much for them as the others. When Guittard are on sale, I do buy them. I have never seen the red bag of 63% ones here. I'd have to check Target, they seem to be the best carrier of Guittard 'round here.
dawn says
63% is good. the higher the better indeed.
Sue says
Oh!! And your cookies look delicious!! 🙂

We're still using raspberries from our garden from last year. We had quite the bumper crop and the frozen ones are still excellent. I wish I could give you some!
Lately I've been using the Hershey's Special Dark. But if I'm doing something where smoothness is important I still like the Guittard semi sweet. If someone local carried the chips you show above I would definitely try them, because I do like Guittard chips!!
