Oreos may be over 100 years old, but Oreo Truffles are a relatively new invention. They're like cake balls, but with a texture that is smoother and firmer. They taste better too, in my opinion. The only drawback and probably the reason I don't make them often is because they require a food processor which means cleaning it, which is not my favorite chore. It's not even difficult since the parts just go in the dishwasher, but I've broken the little plastic tab near the food shoot so many times I'm now scared to use the processor. Okay, way off topic. Sorry.
Jump to RecipeThe 100 Year Old Cookie
I got the recipe from Oreo back when they had their 100th birthday, and while I did post it I never put it into recipe card form and didn't really include a lot of details. This is an updated version, but there still aren't tons of details because these are so simple to make. You just grind Oreos in a food processor, mix in cream cheese and use a cookie scoop to scoop out neat rounded balls of Oreo. You then chill or freeze the little balls while you gather up all of the leftover bits of chocolate in the house for melting. That is, unless you are organized and/or making these for friends and buy a pound of good chocolate or melts.
Melting Chocolate for Dipping
There are a lot of good videos on how to melt and temper chocolate. For small batches of truffles, I do it by microwaving small amounts of chocolate at a time, and when it's about ⅔ of the way melted, just stirring until smooth. For larger batches a double boiler or chocolate melting pot comes in handy.
Dipping Oreo Truffles
If you aren't the best at dipping and know you'll make a mess, order spherical silicone molds. Your truffles will always look professional. You can also try the toothpick and styrofoam method, though it's kind of a hassle and never goes as planned (at our house, at least). And you can always go the simplest route and just spoon chocolate over the truffles and let them have little feet. Some professional candy makers actually do this now because it makes their candies look homemade and they know people enjoy nibbling off the bottoms.
