I keep forgetting how many Oreos are needed for an Oreo crumb pie crust, so I put together this post to refer back to. It tells you how many Oreos plus the the amount of crumbs you need for a 9-inch pie dish. I also included a basic recipe which holds together well. Testing was done with the name brand Oreo cookies, but feel free to substitute. Gluten-Free Oreos should also work.
Jump to RecipeHow Many Oreos Do You Need For Pie Crust?
Package sizes change over time, but my current pack of Oreos weighs 13.29 oz and has 33 cookies. 18 Oreos are needed to make 2 cups of crumbs, which is enough for a 9-inch pie crust in a 9-inch metal pie plate . When ground in a food processor, 2 cups of crumbs weighs around 210 grams or 7 oz. If using a deeper or wider pie dish, you might want to use 24 Oreos for 2 ⅔ cups or about 270 grams crumbs. Volume to weight may vary slightly due to how fine the grind.
Do You Need a Food Processor?
You can always crush your cookies by putting them in a freezer bag and banging with a heavy object. This is my daughter's method. I prefer the food processor because it makes finer crumbs, and finer crumbs hold together better. So for a cohesive crust, consider using the food processor. Another advantage is that if you're making a pie with whipped cream, you can leave the food processor out and use it to whip the cream. It's usually much faster than a stand mixer.
Extra Sugar for a Less Crumbly Oreo Crust
For a slightly sweeter crust, add 1 tablespoon of sugar and bake the crust for at 350 for about 7 minutes. Also, press the finely ground crumbs in tight. The side of a measuring cup like the one in the photo is perfect for pushing crumbs tightly into the side of the pan and onto the bottom.
Greasing the Pan for a Crumb Crust
I recommend putting a thin coating of butter or cooking spray across the pie plate. This is especially true if you are making a crumb crust with sugar since it's stickier.
Metal or Glass
You can make an Oreo crust in a metal, glass or ceramic pie dish. I've grown very fond of my metal pie dish for some reason, but the glass and ceramic ones are always pretty.
Some Good Chocolate Pies
Hopefully you are in the mood to make an Oreo crust now, and if that's the case here are a few of my favorite chocolate pies. The pies I'm linking to all have different crusts, so in this case you'd just swap whatever crust for Oreo.
- Michelle's Pies Perfect Chocolate Cream Pie -- An old favorite that would be great with the Oreo crust in place of the usual pastry crust.
- Condensed Milk Chocolate Cream Pie -- This one is a reader favorite thanks to the convenience of condensed milk.
- Diner Style Chocolate Pie -- Another good one.
- Earl's Chocolate Pie -- This one always surprises me. The filling calls for only 3 tablespoons of cocoa powder, yet the pie seems chocolatey enough. I especially like the texture from the evaporated milk. It's an inexpensive "weeknight" pie.
I'm working on one more new chocolate pie which I'll post soon! It's the pie in the first picture, and it was (is) so good!
Recipe
Oreo Crumb Crust
Equipment
- 1 9-inch metal pie dish
Ingredients
- 18 count Oreos or 2 cups very fine crumbs
- 4 tablespoons butter, melted (can be salted or unsalted)
- 1 tablespoon sugar (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease a 9-inch metal pie dish lightly with extra butter.
- In a food processor, process the Oreos into fine crumbs. You should get 2 cups.
- Mix 2 cups of Oreo crumbs and sugar (if using), then add melted butter and stir until evenly blended.
- Empty mixture directly into the pie dish. Use the side of a measuring cup to press it tightly up and onto the side, and press down the bottom.
- Set on a baking sheet and bake at 350 for 8 to minutes. As soon as you pull the pie from the oven, use the side of your measuring cup to press the puffed, warm crust into place. Let cool.

Hello Darlene! Thank you for the comment :). I am actually making another Oreo crust today for the old Grasshopper Pie recipe. It still calls for Nabisco Famous Wafers RIP.
