I still remember the happy moment as a kid when I learned that coffee cake did not actually contain coffee and was really my grandmother's excuse for eating cake for breakfast. Her idea of the quintessential coffee cake recipe would have been the Cowboy Coffee Cake which has cinnamon and streusel. A fun alternative is the Pancake Mix Sour Cream Streusel Cake. This was a true surprise hit, so I guess people like making good use of pancake mix. 

Along the same lines but with chocolate are the Chocolate Streusel Coffee Cake and the Caramel Streusel Coffee Cake.

Later in life I discovered the Entenmann's coffee cake line and really liked their Cream Cheese Danish Twist.  The No-Knead Sour Cream Braid is similar, so it's also a favorite. The downside is you have to start the dough the day before and keep it chilled overnight.  Or maybe that's the upside?  It's a make-ahead.
